I think I may be a reccer at [livejournal.com profile] 221b_recs for May (and if not, I'll probably take a turn soon). I've noticed that there's nowhere near enough Elementary fic getting rec'd, which is a damn shame. So, since I have a bazillion Elementary fans on my flist: anyone have recs? I'm interested in genfic, and I haven't seen the show, but I don't care about getting spoiled, so anything's cool. Stories featuring Ms. Hudson and/or Clyde would be particularly appreciated. Or if there's awesome fanart, send that my way too (it's a multimedia recs comm).

(Next step: conquer my fear, watch the fucking show. You have no idea how useful tumblr has been for this--I have gotten used to these people's faces, so now I can process their existence! \0/ Plus, I love Candis Cayne so much omg. I can't be the only person who was addicted to Dirty Sexy Money on my flist, can I?)
As you all know, I have a hell of a weakness for cheesy pop music. Like, I just spent a couple hours doing Serious Academic Writing to Rihanna. Anyway, this also manifests in a desire for vids that use these songs, preferably to highlight the ridiculousness of the superserious canons I love.

Anyway, this is a brief recs list for Sherlock vids that use contemporary pop music to either make a point or mock my beloved show. Notes on each. These are all from YouTube, and not found via any scientific searching method.

You can also take this as a place to tell me about vids you love for the show, or songs you really want to see vidded, or direct me to the Mulder/Scully vid set to Umbrella that I desperately want to exist.

Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Glee Cast: I am not kidding about the cheesy-awesome music here )

Aha! I thought that [personal profile] wendelah1 was my writer for [community profile] purimgifts, and she was! She wrote me three lovely interstitial bits from Demons, pointing at the fractures that derive from the episode. Makes me want to rewatch it. They are here, here, and here. Go read them. Go. I'll be waiting here.

I, on the other hand, wrote a series of Buffy ficlets, called Three Games Willow Rosenberg Taught Someone. It is what it says on the tin; my recipient is a Willow/Oz shipper, so I ended up sticking to the earlier seasons, but the whole process really reminded me how much I love BtVS, helped by doing a bunch of rewatching to get prepped. Also, I normally think of myself as a writer of banter, but DAMN, there really is nothing like writing Jossverse banter. It is a whole other league. I'm glad these were so short; I don't think I could have sustained it for longer. :)
Well, "major fandoms" for Yuletide, that is. Scandal and Revenge are two of my most-fun watching experiences on a weekly basis, so I was very happy to see an abundance of fic for them both on Yuletide. What the shows have in common is that they're soapy and women-centric. However, while Revenge is a lousy piece of television that is solid id-TV, Scandal is actually richly nuanced and complex, if melodramatic and unsubtle. Scandal is also nice for having a cast that's racially diverse, full of interesting female characters with both strengths and failings, as well as a really interesting and complex portrayal of a gay couple (I will save my Cyrus And James Feels monologue for later, but it will be glorious). I enjoy watching both of them, but Scandal is actually a good show.

(And I made an icon! See? Incidentally, this show has not enough bright scenes. Hmph.)

Anyway, here are the recs.

Scandal: 4 fics, Olivia and Mellie centric... )

While I like all of these fics, I was a little...something about the fact that almost all the stories written for Revenge this year were about Nolan. Now, I like Nolan. I really like Nolan; he's probably my favorite character. But this is a show where the majority of the characters are women, and where the narrative centers around women's actions. (And some of those actions have to do with their relationships with men, but the women are actors, primarily.) And here all the fic focuses on the dude? I don't know. That said, I do adore Nolan, and I love these fics.

(Can I take this moment to point out that my gift was all about the female characters. And that you should totes read it, because it has been insufficiently kudoed/commented upon? Mmmm-hmm.)

two Revenge fics )

I doubt I'll do another one of these, because I've gone through "my fandoms," though I haven't really dug all the way into Madness yet. But at least I got them up before reveal!
It's Yuletide, everybody! Hooray! I think which story I wrote is painfully obvious if you stumble over it, but I don't know if any of you know the canon, so, maybe you won't discover it.

In any case, I received a fabulous story:

Padded Rooms and Stiletto Heels (1006 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Revenge (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Victoria Grayson, Emily Thorne
Summary:

It’s a trade she’s more than willing to make.

It's a brilliant bit of backstory for Victoria, and does exactly what I want a Victoria story to do: deal in an upfront and direct way with the immorality of many of her actions, while keeping her human. At her most interesting moments, Victoria recognizes how wrong she is, but consciously chooses to continue on the same path, because she prefers this route to others. This is a story where she stands in the face of her own wrongdoing, looks it in the eye, and then keeps going.

I haven't finished reading in some of the "larger" fandoms (SCANDAL FIIIIIIIIC), but here are my recs so far:

first batch of recs )
I haven't gotten a good night's sleep in a week, because I keep staying up too late like a dumbfuck, but I don't think that's why I burst into tears reading this story tonight. I did it because it's just that good. Seeds by [archiveofourown.org profile] thesardine is the story of Sherlock and a box of Triscuits and the nature of depression, and it makes me cry because it is beautiful and because life is worth living and because sometimes green things poke through the dirt and are alive.

If you haven't read it, go now. If you have read it, feel free to join me weeping in the comments.

ETA: Made the mistake of going back and reading it again. "It felt to him as though all the banks had been robbed in one day, with no witnesses." WEEPING AGAIN.

Is anybody else reading Malta Bright by pennypaperbrain? It's a wip, and I'm writing this before I read today's chapter, because I want a spot-check on how obvious something I'm seeing is.

spoilers, talk of mental illness issues )

Anyway, if extremely hot kinky porn is your thing, it's worth reading, as is everything else by pennypaperbrain. WIP, though.
I volunteered again to be a judge for [livejournal.com profile] kinda_gay_award, the Jossverse femslash awards. The mods were very nice about how I was the absolute last judge to get results in, too, because I am a slacking slacker who slacks.

Anyway, I judged in two categories, "Best Canon" and "Best Dollhouse fic," and can whole-heartedly recommend the winners and runners up in those categories. In fact, I can recommend all the stories I judged--there wasn't a bad one in the bunch.

You can read the winners here and all the nominees, in all the categories, are here.

And look! I got a pretty picture for my troubles!

Cracky: Bound in Gold. ARRANGED MARRIAGE AU that is set in 21st century Britain. It is awesome. I want the suit Sherlock wears to the wedding. (Not the mask, though, that sounds creepy.)

Not-Cracky: The Paradox Series. I like my Sherlock Holmes as much a space alien as possible. This Sherlock Holmes thinks as differently from neurotypical human beings as I've ever seen him portrayed, and is trying desperately to figure out how to be in a relationship and care about someone who doesn't think like him. It is amazing, and heartbreaking, and has a happy ending though it's also got plenty of angst. Does a beautiful job with both John and Sherlock's voices.

Um, OK, so I have read this fic twice today already? And it's 55K words, so that's saying something. It's called Indecorous, and it's the brilliant story of Sherlock, John, and Tai (whose name happens to be Mary Morstan) forming a most odd polyamorous triad. It has many things I like, such as complicated people who love each other figuring out how to do so, sex as a means of revealing character and furthering plot, a lot of cuddling, friendship as a component of a romantic relationship, Sherlock working through his issues in a totally batshit way. Oh, and blistering-hot kinky sex. It's just a charming story, and romantic in a terribly unconventional way, and I adore it.

Sympathy For The Werewolf. Why, yes, I'm rec'ing Hawaii Five-O fic. This is an interesting paranormal romance-y thing, which managed to run totally straight-faced with the "Danny discovers Steve is a werewolf, true love and hurt/comfort and hot sex ensues." It's tropey as hell, but well-written and with a sweet core.

A Q&A with the Advice Columnist Called 'Sugar' Sugar is a wonderful writer; at the same time, this resonated with me as someone who has done her best writing wearing someone else's name.

Fanfic Flamingo Speaks For Me.
Third part of my purimgifts story! Gail's bowl now has a TARDIS in it. If you don't know what any of those nouns mean, probably you will not like the story.

[livejournal.com profile] queer_fest is the inheritor to [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest. Prompts are open through March 30. NOBODY TAKE MY PROMPT ABOUT MULDER'S OXFORD BOYFRIEND, OKAY, THAT ONE'S MINE. (And if nobody takes my Samantha prompt, I might just take that as well.)

I'm sure there are other things, I just don't remember them.
My third [livejournal.com profile] crack_van rec is up: Rounded by Sleep by [livejournal.com profile] elliestories.

And the second part of my [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts story is up:
Waiting for the angry gods to smite our race , which is Josh and Toby! In Year-That-Never-Was New York! And losses have been incurred, sniff sniff. I can't wait for part three tomorrow!

My second rec for [livejournal.com profile] crack_van is up: And I Make My Bed In Sheol, by [livejournal.com profile] threeguesses. Go and read it if you haven't (but maybe have some tissues handy; high angst level, and it delivers).

(Not mine, yet. Though I just realized that the battle runs 'til next Thursday, not tomorrow today, so I don't have to stay up all night writing dirty things on the internet, and can therefore go to bed. Hooray.)

Anyway, I've been trawling the battle, and here are some recs, so far. What I'm noticing is that, generally, at least in the fandoms I'm reading in, what's getting written are stories that are really interstitial to canon, by which I mean stories that draw heavily on things that are really going on in the canon storylines, and which are simply being played out during the sex. It's less about PWP in most of these cases, and more about characterization-via-fucking, which is one of my favorite things about good fannish porn, that it's something else while also being hot and dirty.

Fringe, plus one Fringe/XF crossover )

The West Wing )

Doctor Who and Torchwood (that's one fandom, right?) )

Other: Firefly, Hawaii Five-O, Corpse Bride )
And it is with no little fanfare that I identify myself as the author of Many Forms of Resistance, in what was termed the "Sociology RPF" fandom. It is a story about C. Wright Mills and Michel Foucault taking a cross-country motorcycle trip, while fighting zombies. There is some philosophy, and there is some shooting zombies with guns that, one of my commenters assures me, are totally inappropriate for the purpose.

So, basically a standard fic for me, y/n?

***

I have barely touched the fic written for Yuletide. I've read maybe two of the Fringe fics, only a handful of the Janelle Monae ones, nothing in Dollhouse that wasn't my gift. I'm hoping to work through them slowly. However, given that it's proper to rec, below are my rec lists so far. Rather than organizing them by fandom, I'm organizing them into two categories: serious fic, and crack!fic.

Amazingly enough, all of the Lady Gaga video fic I'm reccing is on the serious fic list.

SRS BSNS YULETIDE: Dar Williams, Lady Gaga, Janelle Monae's Metropolis, Fringe, Warehouse 13, Hip-Hop RPF, Nikita )

CRACKITY CRACK CRACK: Cooks Illustrated, Panda Cheese Commercial, John Hodgman, Sharktopus, Anthony Bourdain, Old Spice Guy, Hark! A Vagrant, Hawaii 5-O )

And, now, back to my damn writing. If you're one of my X-Files fannish friends, head on over to [livejournal.com profile] xf_santa and check out all the great fic and vids being posted. They definitely have not been getting the love they deserve, and some of them are really super.
