Is anybody else reading Malta Bright by pennypaperbrain? It's a wip, and I'm writing this before I read today's chapter, because I want a spot-check on how obvious something I'm seeing is.



I haven't read the previous stories, but apart from the crime the major point of the piece so far is 'what the fuck is wrong with Sherlock? because he's not ok." And I read it, and I think it's so painfully obvious that he's dealing with rapid cycling that I am kind of horrified that John didn't get there in ten fucking minutes. Maybe because manic!Sherlock and "normal"!Sherlock don't differ that much? Of course, there's enough evidence within canon to diagnose him as bipolar anyway, even without what's happening in the fic.

Are we supposed to think that John's an idiot when it comes to dxing psych issues, or is it not supposed to be apparent to the reader? I honestly don't know.

Anyway, if extremely hot kinky porn is your thing, it's worth reading, as is everything else by pennypaperbrain. WIP, though.

I'm not familiar with the fic but I don't know what the symptoms are of "rapid cycling" so I am assuming the average reader wouldn't know either. Would a trauma surgeon necessarily know them this many years after his med school psych rotation (assuming med school works the same in GB and he had a psych rotation), although he might pick up that Sherlock needed a psych consult--if he was his patient, that is.

This is super helpful. My wife, being a completist and organized, helpfully noted that it's explicit in the notes to the work that comes before Malta Bright that it's an exploration of Sherlock as bipolar, so that answers a little bit of my question about what-the-reader-is-supposed-to-know.* But it helps to know that this might not be the first place someone goes with watching the behavior, even someone with medical training. (The first place John goes is "how high are you right now?" which is actually a fairly good deduction, in context.)
