Isk came up to me in the dining room while I was sending a work email. "Mommy," he said, "On the new Ben Folds album there is a song with the name of the man that you and Mama like reading stories about."

I blinked. "There's a song with Sherlock Holmes in it?"

"Uh-huh."

I hugged him. "Thank you for telling me, honey."

In the car later that afternoon, he said, "This one is it! He said Sherlock. He didn't say the Holmes part."

For the record, I can detect no mention of Sherlock Holmes in this song, and no conjunction of syllabus which sounds like "Sherlock," but I still trust my baby.

Also, this video is hilarious.

So, basically, I'm letting my preschooler give me a fic prompt...

I totally just read Isk most of the stories in the Mo Willems fandom on the AO3.

Yeah, we start fanning early in this house.
I am guessing that you already know how you are going to vote tomorrow. (Or maybe you've voted already; I don't live in a state with early voting, so I always forget it exists.)

If you are still making up your mind, I would be OVERJOYED to tell you precisely why I support President Obama's reelection campaign, and to listen to your reasons for being undecided.

In any case, please take tomorrow seriously. It matters to me, a lot.

I'm a New Yorker, right down to my bones. I may not have grown up in the city (though my roots and extended family are largely in upstate New York), but there is nowhere that has fit me so well in all my life, nowhere as comfortable and completing. And my city, right now, is underwater.

This isn't New Orleans; we were better prepared and a little more equipped. This isn't Haiti; we're a rich city and have resources. But it's my home, and it's just fucking wrecked right now. And I'm four hundred miles away and at a loss.

So, [livejournal.com profile] fandomaid. I've put up two offers: one to stitch samplers, and one for fic. I'm not always timely with this stuff, but I at least intend to follow through.

If you'd like to help New York, Masbia is supporting one of the shelters for senior citizens in my old neighborhood in Brooklyn. I haven't yet found a clear link for who is doing recovery work in Haiti, Cuba, and elsewhere in the Caribbean, which is fucked up, considering how much harder the recovery is going to be there, but if I find something, I'll post it.
Yo, people with LJs:

[livejournal.com profile] het_reccers is having a cage match through midnight (EST) tonight. Mulder and Scully are running against some very nice people from a movie I've never seen.*

Vote right this minute.

*I'm sure I'll like it when I see it, given Whedon + superheroes, but the point remains.

Major downside to getting your wife an AO3 account:

getting to the end of your yuletide signup and getting a message that reads, "Thanks, [archiveofourown.org profile] leigh_nahurriyeh! Your Yuletide Signup has been processed!"

Ffff. Now I need to type all that again...

PS: YES, SHE IS LEIGH_NAHURRIYEH. I CONVINCED HER. SHE ONLY ROLLED HER EYES LIKE TWICE.
I wrote a whole letter and it got eated my the internet. I hate my life.

You have my notes from the sign-up, so here are just some additional stuff:

Last year's letter. Many parts still apply.
A Meta on Marvel 1602, which talks more about my feels about gender and race in it, and why I want you to do something transformative with them.
My Dana Scully Tag and a meta with a big chunk about her in case you want to write League of Extraordinary Gentlepersons. (The canon for that is very short, if you get stuck writing something else.)

I think that's it! Thank you! <3

Said to my wife while we both lay in bed reading fic:

Amal: I hate when the tags on a fic are just a list of sexual acts. I don't care HOW they fuck. I just care a) that they fuck, and b) that there are ~~feelings.~~

Is anybody else reading Malta Bright by pennypaperbrain? It's a wip, and I'm writing this before I read today's chapter, because I want a spot-check on how obvious something I'm seeing is.

spoilers, talk of mental illness issues )

Anyway, if extremely hot kinky porn is your thing, it's worth reading, as is everything else by pennypaperbrain. WIP, though.
I volunteered again to be a judge for [livejournal.com profile] kinda_gay_award, the Jossverse femslash awards. The mods were very nice about how I was the absolute last judge to get results in, too, because I am a slacking slacker who slacks.

Anyway, I judged in two categories, "Best Canon" and "Best Dollhouse fic," and can whole-heartedly recommend the winners and runners up in those categories. In fact, I can recommend all the stories I judged--there wasn't a bad one in the bunch.

You can read the winners here and all the nominees, in all the categories, are here.

And look! I got a pretty picture for my troubles!

If you have chronic skin itchiness, and then your cats somehow get fleas (we don't know how, they're indoor cats), and then you get flea bites on every inch of your legs from hips on down to ankles...

You will eventually become convinced you have a flea up your nose.

Author: [personal profile] amalnahurriyeh/[livejournal.com profile] amalnahurriyeh
Fandom: Sherlock (BBC)
Pairing: Sherlock/John, intimations of Casey/Monica
Rating: Teen/PG-13 (language, implied sex)
Warnings: None
Angst Level: fluffy as hell
Timeline: Sherlock: Post-Reichenbach. Caseyverse: mostly before the action of Machines of Freedom.

Summary: John and Sherlock spend some time in Stark, Montana, saving the world from aliens. It's mostly not boring.

Author's Note:

Yeah, so, this is a bunch of Sherlock-and-John-go-to-Stark fluff. It's as random as you think it is. Enjoy my crack problem. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] maybe_amanda for the beta/cheerleading. You can also read it here on the AO3.

Please explain to me why neither "ladies doing science" nor "it's for science!" are canonical tags on the AO3. Honestly.

(Yes, this means expect fic shortly...)

(ETA: OK, "post-Reichenbach" isn't a canonical tag? Something is wrong on the internet.)
Redshirts - John Scalzi: Andrew Dahl, Maia Duvall, Jenkins, Lt. Kerensky

Anno Dracula Series - Kim Newman: Geneviève Dieudonné, Charles Beauregard, John Seward, Inspector Lestrade

Marvel 1602 - Rojhaz, Jean Grey, Virginia Dare, Natasha Romanoff (Marvel 1602)

I'm pretty impressed with myself that I nominated three different print fandoms. However, if someone has a free slot and wants to do me a solid, I still want The Backyardigans nominated. Both Tasha and Uniqua, please.

You've got until tomorrow night to do nominations. Get thee hence.

(Now I just have to not default...)

Now would be a good time to go over to the Prompts Post and leave suggestions for things you'd like me to cross-stitch.
For the Brits/near-Brits I know:

Say you were a British person not in the uk, with at least a little national pride, an overgenerous allotment of pyromania, and access to a lot of open space and chemicals. What would you do to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day? In particular, if you could compare/contrast to USian 4th of July traditions, that would be lovely.

Yes, this is for a fic. Anybody who guesses what the fic is going to be wins the right to suggest a scene, because everybody should get to play with something this cracky.

Author: Amal Nahurriyeh ([personal profile] amalnahurriyeh/[livejournal.com profile] amalnahurriyeh)
Fandom: Sherlock (BBC)
Pairing: Sherlock/John UST
Rating: R (Drugs, violence, depression)
Warnings: Some suicidal ideation and mental illness, canon-typical implied violence to bad guys
Angst Level: turn that fucker up to eleven
Timeline: post-Reichenbach

Author's Notes: thanks to [livejournal.com profile] memories_child for a speedy beta and help with some of the technical stuff.

This is what happens when you don't have enough songs for a fan mix or enough plot for a whole fic. So you get both: five songs, five flash-fics (not drabbles, they're too long), arranged chronologically and alternating POV. I'm embedding a YouTube video of each song in the fic, so you can listen to them as you read, if you want. The title of each section is a song lyric as well.

angst ahoy )
