I don't think you are unusual at all in not being fannish about the rest of the Sherlock Holmes canon. I would go so far as to say that there is a large percentage of the fandom who are only peripherally aware of its existence. Your bookish, etc. friends are more the exception than the rule. Not that I'm putting myself in their company, but I dug out my copy of The Complete Sherlock Holmes as soon as I heard about the BBC series.
