Hmm, really? Why do they seems so different to you? I look at them, and I see 1) procedural crime drama 2) central pair of characters who are the emotional heart of the show 3) meant to be at least a little thinky 4) hip and agressively contemporary in their framing. Not to mention 5) derived from the same source text. At the level of casual viewing, they should appeal to the exact same people. (In fact, in the abstract, Elementary appeals to me a lot. This is partially why I am feeling so weird about it--this is a show I should be watching, but then weirdness.)
I guess, when I'm not just flailing about because feelings, I'm interested in the way fandom creates these spaces where our minds and our hearts get tangled up in wanting different things--the ways in which we relate to our fannish objects that doesn't follow any particular sort of logical thread, even emotional logic. I don't really have a clear way of expressing this yet--probably someone else has, though.
